First, Centros Ciência Viva from Porto, Coimbra and Algarve were contacted and showed their activities and visitors. Then, we contacted FEMS members deeply involved in IMD – Joana Verran, IBBS member and Bad Bugs Book Club promoter, who was at the time lecturing on FEMS Summer School in Greece; and Joseph Shuttleworth representing FEMS Office, organizer of the Microbe Art Contest, that provided help to the IMD team on how to promote the event and disseminate the word through Social Media. A Skype connection with the commemorations happening on IST in the Chemistry Garden was also achieved, showcasing the exhibitions and short talks from several ULisboa schools. ITQB also joined by skype call, and showed their celebrations in Jardins do Palácio Marquês de Pombal and a ULisboa team was at Rua Augusta contacting with the general public and tourists.

Serbia commemorated IMD

As planned, Serbia commemorated IMD 2019 with an interactive workshop “Microorganisms ID Cards” for children in a shopping mall! Great experience with a smelly Streptomyces plate and creation of a corresponding ID Card by the young visitor!

The session Microorganisms in the Garden included exhibitions prepared by MSc and PhD students from Técnico, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária and Instituto Superior de Agronomia, from ULisboa. The Chemistry Garden was occcupied by 13 stands with hands-on scientific experiments and demonstrations, to which correspond 13 short talks performed by PhD students to elucidate the public. The exhibitions were visited by the IST community and by high school students from the Lisbon area.

After lunch, there was a public tasting of a beer produced by LX Brewery using yeasts isolated at Prof. Isabel Sá-Correia’s lab at the Biological Sciences Research Group of Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), IST. The President of IST, the President of the Scientific Council of IST, the Director of iBB and the Head of the Department of Bioengineering were present and a group photo with the mascots Bak and Saka was taken by 15h.

Microorganisms and Society (Técnico, ULisboa)

Microorganisms and Society (Técnico, ULisboa) – On September 17, 2019, the commemorations of the International Microorganism Day at Técnico Lisboa, Campus Alameda also nvolved the session “Microorganisms and Society” with talks on the role of microorganisms in our society.

Speakers from the companies A4F-Algae for Future, Technophage, and Cerveja Oitava Colina, brought the notion of the impact of microorganisms and microbiology in industry. Members from the microbiology scientific community from ULisboa (Técnico, Faculdade de Farmácia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária, Instituto Superior de Agronomia, INESC-ID) and from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT-Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical and ITQB-NOVA) were also among the invited speakers.

A Skype Call by  15h30 was included in this session to connect the IMD commemoration events, taking place in Portugal and around the world. The skype call was conducted by the President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology, Professor Isabel Sá-Correia and the skype calls´program included: Centros Ciência Viva (CCV Algarve, Galeria da Biodiversidade and Exploratório Coimbra), the FEMS Office (Joseph Shuttleworth that gave some insights on the FEMS suport on Social Media Managment for IMD) and a FEMS Summer School for Microbiology Education (taking place in Greece, a talk with Joana Verran, FEMS delegate), and several activities taking place across Portugal (IST-Microorganisms in the Garden, ITQB-NOVA, UMinho, and Arco Rua Augusta). Unfortunately, the programmed call to Universidade Federal de Lavras, Brasil, could not be established.

This session was streamed live and can still be watched here.

Antimicrobial resistance and new strategies (IHMT, NOVA)

Did you know that antimicrobial resistance is not just about antibiotics and that old drugs can be repurposed to fight resistant bacteria? IHMT-NOVA commemorated the International Microorganism Day in Oeiras, Portugal, targeting students, families and anyone who wanted to find out more about microorganisms! The activity, that gathered the attention of more than 400 visitors, focused on the role of biocides in bacterial resistance to antimicrobials and on the search for effective drugs for the treatment of these infections. Participants were enrolled into interactive activities that allowed them to understand the concepts of antimicrobial resistance and to get familiar with the several steps involved in drug design/repurposing.
